“Buland Bharat kin Buland Tasveer………”, the moment my eardrums are echoed with this jingle, my brain resonances the Brand name Bajaj in my head, and I see one of India’s biggest Motorcycle manufacturers in my mind. With its logo in my eyes and lyrics on my tongue, I have added one more start on the badge on Bajaj’s shoulder for its wonderful campaign in 1990’s which still creates the brand value and has not allowed any other company to overshadow its positioning.
Is this marketing or advertising? Well I know for sure, I was not looking for this answer when I joined my MBA program.
For that matter there was no question in my mind, all thanks to our education systems and society which made Post graduation as a necessity than the interest of subject. May be that’s why college drop outs are better Entrepreneurs, CEO’s, & Directors. Forget that! But yes thanks to that system which introduced me to the world of Digital Marketing and again I was left alone to search the horizons.
After all the theory lectures from corporate gurus and daily analysis of CTC packages offered, I landed myself in a Tier 2 city’s small web services company, Application Nexus.
Soon I will be completing a year in the company and boy it was a rollercoaster ride, I bet I enjoyed every fall and rise of it. Every MBA or BBA Marketing pass out dreams of joining Fortune 500 and wants to follow the corporate dream. And the biggest huddle is to catch the fish with other thousand fishermen in the same river. And in a race to catch big fish they miss out all Gold fishes on their way. Opportunities with Nexus were endless for me; working with renowned media agencies, understanding Global audience, high business standards, understanding the web 2.0 technologies and interactive marketing and the list can go on.
My first lesson was to unlearn all theories of success taught in PG and see every aspect from scratch, there is no straight road to glory; you need to find your own way though. I am still not on the path of glory; what I understood was copy pasting things won’t work in the industry. The idea of internet itself is creative enough and working with it provides opportunity to understand the global brands like Google; Yahoo; Rediff etc.
For beginners like me it is a good chance to understand business fundamentals and gain wide knowledge about industry aspects which are related to business. With International clients and high quality standards you are not asked to work for it but pushed to perform on the global level. With constant updates in technology and changing strategies of Brands, I may not win the race but I am enjoying every lap of it.
About the Author
Shravan Prasad, the writer of this article, works in the Interactive Marketing department at Application Nexus. He applies his understanding and knowledge in the field of Analytics, Digital Marketing and Internet Media for the company.
Well, they say that ‘Pen is mightier that the Sword’. All of us must have read or heard this proverb somewhere at least once in our lives so far. As easy it appears to read, as difficult it was to understand for me once upon a time. But the picture got clearer when I joined Application Nexus as a writer more than a year ago; the day was April 19th 2010. And there started a new era in my life; an enjoyable journey I would say.
On the very first day, I was told that we writers are meant to be creative and write articles for people to read, MS Word and the Internet are your tools. I said ‘Ok’ in mind and began.
Then, word after word, phrase after phrase and article after article, I gained a thorough understanding of ‘Web Content’ and ‘Internet Journalism’. On the way, I discovered that there are so many different types of Contents that can be written for the Internet Media; right from informative articles to white papers, reviews of products, case studies, news, product descriptions, editorials, advertorials and what not. Today when I am taking a walk on the street and I see the things around, several titles for possible articles just rush to my mind. And even today, before writing anything, I repeat that word ‘Ok’ in my mind to remember how I started and stick to the basics. The tools still remain the same with an added ingredient; the passion to write!
There is no Graduation or Post-Graduation course of long years available for writing in our education system. That is the reason I say, ‘Thirst for knowledge, hunger to achieve and flair to express words on paper (the MS Word document in this case)’ is all that you need to become a ‘Writer’. To sum this up, all you need is passion; not an educational degree! And believe it or not, writing for the web and working in the field of Internet Journalism is indeed a professional and respected career option to go for.
I always had a fondness like most of you to write anything and everything on paper; those essays, letters and reports in school, short stories, poems and much more. My time in the company so far has taught me so much and I know that the process will continue further. I look forward to keep writing more and working with several other passionate writers in the coming future.
To conclude, I say and maintain, ‘Even if the Sword keeps making history, the Pen continues to write it, always!’
Mark Elliot Zuckerberg, Lawrence "Larry" Page, Sergey Brin; everyone wants to be one of them right? Why not, we can be one day. We all want to be a part of MNC or Big Corporate but how many of us succeed in that? The point here is even if you have lots of computer knowledge and there is no big taker then what’s the use. But again, there are lots of opportunities out there; you just need to search them! Not every MNC or Big Corporate will give you a big sea to float; you need a proper company to express and expand your knowledge.
After completing my B.E in computer stream, I joined Application Nexus, a small business providing web services. There were many IT Jobs in Nashik but the moment I entered Application Nexus, I knew I was up with something challenging indeed!
Since then I am still working here and I can say that this place helps me not only understand more about technology but also the ‘end user’ use of it.
Here I came across many things and have worked on developing websites using content management systems such as Joomla and Wordpress with their end user and commercial values in mind. I have also worked on developing web applications using PHP 5, JavaScript with the help of MYSQL database for clients, ecommerce solution for the world biggest entertainer, Disney’s vendor. Also, I have developed android applications for in-house use lately.
Every day I am learning something new which not only helps me to keep in touch with the world but also gives me the intelligence to apply what I learn. World is changing fast and to keep yourself with the world you have to start somewhere; if not a Big Company, an internship program like OpenInterns.

Ok, how many of you use Google? Well you must have noticed when you search for a particular keyword in Google, how a site ranks up. Ever wondered what’s the magic behind that? What fuels that site to rank on the top above others? If you are curious about knowing how Google works, well you have come at the right place. We have been spending our midnight oil trying to put forward the nuts and bolts combination to make our sites rank on Google and various other search engines. Now how that works would be your next question. And we have an answer to that.
Google considers various factors which influence the rankings for any particular site in its index. There are around 200 factors which power this decision engine. As an employee of Application Nexus, it’s my duty to decode that and one day, find out the entire 200 factors. Everyday a new code to crack; every day a new parameter! We currently have reached up to 70 or so.
Some of them would include:
- Content
- Backlinks
- Onsite combinations
- Keywords in URL
- Keyword in H1, H2 and H3
- TLD
- OOP
- Poison Words
- Dynamic pages
- Dmoz
Now if the above factors are something at which you would be startling at then well hell yeah ‘You’ belong here. Boy I remember my initial days learning and working on SEO day and night and slowly and slowly moving ahead with the rankings. It’s phenomenal when you see how your effort helps a site rank on the top. And it’s a constant innovation and experimentation route. A small combination can be crucial to a ranking to one site while it won’t be for the other. Every day is a new challenge. And biggest thing is the people who rate your work or who speak if you are right or wrong are not your superiors but Google itself - The most neutral ‘leader’ that can be there. We just show you the way. So we want to hire spirited and motivated people with proper challenging skills to join our family tree. So why don’t you drop in for Coffee, We will sponsor the biscuits. :)
